Each person must block the device.

Only works with Windows not other operating systems.

"Sounds weird, but this isn't really a print server at all!" 2010-03-03
By S. Bellows (Portland, OR USA)
I bought the HP Wireless G USB print server to connect my old HP 3200 multifunction printer -- which I use mainly for simple b&w printing -- to a three-computer home network.

I expected that I was buying a regular print server (and was looking forward to it working flawlessly, being from HP). By "print server" I mean a piece of hardware containing the software needed to receive print jobs from the different computers, store them in memory, and send them to the printer to print.

That's NOT what this is! Yes, there's a piece of hardwear that you connect to your printer -- but all the software resides on the computers, and that software has to communicate with the other computers before a job will print.

In my case, this arrangement doesn't work right. Once one computer has printed, the server locks out all other computers, and the only way to print from any other computer is to unplug/reboot the server itself. Most of the time, in fact, once you've printed a doc -- or simply if enough time has gone by -- you have to reboot the server to print another job even from the same computer. So when I want to print, I reach under my desk, unplug the server, replug the server, wait, then hit print. When my wife (downstairs) wants to print, she yells up, "unplug the server!" and I do so.

I've troubleshot, uninstalled, reinstalled, etc. and it's always the same. It seems like most reviewers here love this server; good for them. But The Google reveals that some fraction of people have this problem. IMHO, this is the worst piece of junk I've ever bought for my computer -- I won't even injure someone else by trying to sell it on eBay, but will just throw it away. HP should be embarrassed that this is the only printer server they sell nowadays. Don't buy it.

 "Piece of Junk" 2009-11-20
By Gary Bilodeau
This will not connect to my network. It goes through the whole setup and it says it cannot connect to the network. I tried it again later after a reboot. Now windows XP says it doesn't recognize the USB device. I have 4 computers hooked up to a wireless network. I would rather buy 4 printers then deal with this crap. HP seems to be heading downhill. I have had serious issues with a new HP laptop. Of course it is not just HP. I think it's the combination of HP and Microsoft Windows. I went the server route because windows wouldn't allow me to share a printer (4 computers all XP). After reading several articles on how to fix this, it still wouldn't work. Through the server in the garbage yesterday, right where it belongs.

"Recommend professional grade only or hard wired." 2009-11-20
By Mark Leavitt (South Windsor, CT USA)
The HP 2101nw Wireless G Print Server is probably good for older printers, but mine is brand new and I suspect the print drivers have not been fully tested. The printer worked fine when wired directly (no wireless). During the wireless days, I spent over 10 hours trying to get this installed properly, I ran into connecticty issues, drop connections, software toolbox issues and print queues not clearing. Tool box software would work for a while, then locked up the sysem--- I had to reboot numerous times if not over 4-5 in one day.

I used to have a NetGear wireless print server, but it doesn't support this color laserjet CP1215 (another disappointment), but that one worked about 90% of the time. Wireless print servers have strange glitches and I believe the technology is not the best due to the wireless network routers having a higher priority for testing and research versus the wirelss print servers that sell less.

HP Support was very good and realized a problem with my current UBS wired print port, they had me doing a million things that didn't work that the installation should of resolved (this happen to me years ago wth NetGear too).

Pros: Small unit, 3x4 inches

Works without a wireless router, can connect with wireless card in PC only.

Installation is streamline (if no surprises).

Cons: No Windows 7 support

Constant blinking light when printer is off

No direct logging into server like a NetGear or linksys for advance settings.

Installation could be a problem on some systems printer/port settings.

I would look elsewhere and fine a professional grade network wireless print server that of course supports your printer and/or operating a system (Windows 7 not supported). Also, when thinking wirless printing, future printer replacement may present a challenge for this unit (as well other brands) or may not be supported as this model may be replaced in the future.

In the meantime, I'm going back to hard wire USB cable via underneath the carpeting. Just will make life easier and in the future.

 "Bad documentation, ok product." 2010-01-27
By Peter P. Waskiewicz Jr. (Portland, OR USA)
Let me first point out that [...], whom I bought this from, is a great company. I bought this product, it shipped very quickly, and when I couldn't get it to work (see below), they were very quick and courteous to issue a fully pre-paid RMA shipping label. I highly recommend[...]; excellent support, very quick turnaround.

Now the print server itself appeared to be ready to work out of the box. However, it just failed to recognize my HP LaserJet 1020. Also, the software packaged with the device was flat out broken. It was impossible to assign a static IP to the device, and I had to search Buffalo's website to find a "new" package. The package finally allowed me to assign a static IP. However, the printer was still offline. The Buffalo tech support was fairly quick to respond to my issue (within 24 hours), but they weren't terribly helpful. I ended up having to return the product.

I have two of these print servers on a 1 Gbps Cisco router and a D-Link draft-N wireless access point. They connect two HP laser printers to the network which has PCs using XP32Pro, Vista32Biz, and Win7Pro-64. All work fine.

 "Reliable, Easy" 2008-08-31
By Wade Armstrong (Los Angeles, CA)
I use this product to put a USB HP Laserjet printer on our home network with a PC and a Mac, and it's flawless on both platforms. Setup is easy -- although, note as the other reviewer did that there's an undocumented Web interface that's actually easier and quicker to use in my opinion. Just type in the IP address of the print server and you're there! Set the print server up with a static IP address. The Mac automatically detects the attached printer via Rendezvous; for the PC, just set up a TCP/IP printer port by creating a new local TCP/IP port with the IP of the print server. The Buffalo print server may be even easier to use -- and certainly more reliable -- than an Airport Extreme that keeps another printer on the home network.

 "Great product, poor documentation" 2008-08-12
By Mike Oppenheim (New York, NY)
I am using this product as a replacement for another similar product in the same price range. The Buffalo product works *really* well; no delays in printing, completely reliable. Works beautifully.

The only functional issue I have come across is that it works beautifully when configured as a TCP/IP printer port using the IP address. I was not able to get it to work as a network printer using windows networking; I could see and configure the "printer" as a network printer, but it froze the maching when trying to print

I would give it 5 stars for the product performance, but took off one star because of the quality of the software which ships for configuration of the device and because of the quality of documentation, which I think would make this a slightly challenging device to install and use for a complete novice to computer networking in general and print servers specifically.

SOFTWARE: When I ran the configuration software on one of my computers, it was not able to detect the device on my (very basic) home network. A bit of fiddling with network settings did not help. I went to a different computer on the network, and lo and behold it found the device on the first try and I could set up the device.

DOCUMENTATION: There were a number of things I stumbled across which were nowhere to be found in the documentation.

1) The instructions tell you how to find the IP address assigned to the device to configure your printer port. What they fail to mention, though, is that you better then set up your network so the printer server has a static IP address, or you may run into trouble if the network is reset and assigned a different IP address.

2) There is a web interface to connect to the device and get some status information and do some basic configuration. This is NOWHERE in their documentation. More importantly, nowhere in the documentation are you provided the username to connect to the device via browser (the password is set using the configuration software). Only from guessing from a cryptic clue in the login failure message could I guess the username.

Only other issue I ran into (which is an HP issue, not a Buffalo issue) was that it could not find the driver for the printer I was using (HP Multifunctional 6110); however, HP tech support was able to send me a list of alternative drivers to select and I have had no problems, even with graphics, envelopes, and custom sized paper using the driver they suggested.

"Pretty good, but OSX with Canon IP4000 was tricky" 2006-11-16
By J. Turner (Massachusetts USA)
Overall, now that it's set up, this little dude is great. Setting up on Windows was a snap with the provided instructions. My MAC was a little toughter however.

First, do not drink three gin & tonics before trying to install without reading the directions (mac only.) Something will probably not work.

Full disclosure: You can drink while doing the Windows install. I consider this an anachronism.

Second, consult the Apple web page about "CUPS" printer drivers and get something called - well, I forget what it's called, but you have to download some printer driver called gutenprint or something to see an IP4000 at an IP address, which this server needs - before you get frustrated by the fact that the original drivers don't seem to work. At least their (Apple's) help forums are somewhat usable.

But, that said, installaton is pretty easy when you have the special drivers. And the price is awesome. And it works as advertised.

Hmm. I think I'll print a copy of this review...

This device is compatible with Windows XP and Windows Vista (32 bit). I installed it on my older HP computer running Windows XP (SP3) as well as my Toshiba Laptop running Windows Vista (SP2). I used the device for wireless printing to an HP Photosmart C4480 All In One (Printer, Scanner, Copier) and all functions work properly for both computers.

As to the date of this review, the device is not compatible with Windows 7. Customer Service notified me via email informing me that they are working on an updated driver for this device. My inquiry was answered quickly and respectfully. TRENDnet Customer Service is great (5 stars deserved if this category was available).

The device was easy to install and functions as expected for the supported operating systems noted in the specifications on their website, "Supported OS Windows 2000/XP/2003 Server/Vista (32-Bit)." It also has a 3 year warranty; this company really stands behind their products.

"Not compatible with Windows 7 or Vista SP 1" 2010-03-10
By Mark J. Miller (Farmington, UT USA)
I can't knock this too much because the install was pretty easy and it did recognize my Canon Pixma 780. However, Windows 7 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 require driver signing to ensure driver compatibility and the Print Server Utility that comes with the print server has not been updated since 2008. So even though the utility installed, I received several warnings during installation from Windows that the drivers were not signed. Then afterwards, I tried to connect to the printer using the utility and could not. I contacted Trendnet support and was told "Windows 7 is not currently supported. TRENDnet is currently verifying operating system compatibility for this product.". If you are running vista and use Windows Update you are most likely running SP 1 and you will not be able to use this either. If you want to check to see if Trendnet has updated anything since, you should check the downloads link for the product page on the Trendnet site.

    Precious aluminum design:
High-quality materials were used when producing the Kaze Server. The front consists of brushed aluminum and accentuates the illuminated LCD display in an optimal way.

    Fan control and temperature monitoring:
With the Kaze Server, four fans can be controlled independently, and four temperatures (in either ° C or °F) can be monitored.

In addition to manually control the fan speed on four knobs, the Kaze Server Fan controller allows a fully automated and a semi-automatic operation mode.

AUTO mode: Kaze Server switches off the fan, when the real temperature is much lower than the self-defined temperature.

SEMI mode: In addition to AUTO mode, a minimal rpm of the fan can be defined together with the self-defined temperature.

An integrated acoustic alarm function (which can be deactivated by a jumper) warns the user from overheating and failure of a fan.

    Wide range of fan controller:
The fan voltage can be independently controlled from 3.7 - 12 V, in addition, the fan can be switched off completely which allows the user to choose between high and ultra-cooling operation.

     "Not Good" 2010-04-03
    By Programming Kat
If all you really want is to see how fast your fans are moving...this is the product. But if you want to monitor the temperature of a particular device, control the fans, or if you are new to building systems...this NOT the product.

First, the instructions are poorly written...and the pictures leave room for error. Oh, and if you have a tool-less case this product is short [so you'll have to screw it in on one side and hope for the best], even though this product states it fits into a spare 5.25" bay. Second, the installation took about an hour due to the fact the pictures of the temperature connections do NOT correspond to the ACTUAL layout of the circuit board. Also, if you have large hands, connecting the temp leads will be a nightmare! Then the "heat resistant" tape that is provided for the thermometers/recoding end of temperature leads does not work...it comes off and the thermometer is dangling in your case which defeats the purpose of monitoring a specific device. And lastly, the knobs to control the fans do NOT work...this may be due to the fact I can't push too hard for fear of the product being pushed into the case due to it not being secured in the bay.

On the positive side: this product matches the beauty of my case and the data is easy to read...BUT, do not purchase this product if you want a real fan controller rather than a simple monitor. It may look good, and the specs may sound ideal, it just doesn't work as the packaging or Scythe Kaze Server "advertise". This was truly money wasted!

This product is horrible. It does not in any way work. It appears to work. But it will never print. You will waste an entire evening and then be forced to return this horrible product. The customer service is unbelievably bad. You will be on hold for at least an hour. And then they will be unable to help you. The product was designed in 2005 and has not been updated. If you are a computer wiz you may be able to do this by manually changing intricate settings. That is what the customer service person attempted, but even he could not help. Ultimately he said that I needed support from HP too. But it should be plug and play. This is 2010. I have set up routers and other similar things but this is just plain awful.

"OK print server, documentation is awful!" 2010-01-23

The unit works. Well, it does when I set it to use IP printing. Wouldn't when I set it to use Windows printing ...

I've set up several brands of network routers, so I'm no novice when it comes to network hardware. But setting up this unit took a lot of time, figuring out what to set. The documentation is useless unless you use Windows, and wouldn't be very helpful at all if you did.

My advice, even if you use Windows: forget the installation software. Just hook the unit up, point your web browser at it, and try settings until it works!

I used this to attach a Canon i860 printer to my Home Network. It worked fine for about a year and a half and about 6 months ago it stopped working. I put some effort into getting it to work again. I reinstalled it several times. Reinstalled the printer on several different computers. Nothing worked. Either the device itself failed or the software has become incompatible with OS updates. I cannot recommend this product anymore. I went out and bought a new Network ready printer HP Photosmart premium to eliminate the need for a separate print server device. The printer cost $119 here in Amazon. It is really not worth the money to spend it on this device. Rather spend the money on a new network ready printer.

"Not running Windows? Need to do manual setup? Good luck!" 2010-01-11
By Donald C. Allen (Carlisle, MA USA)
If you don't run Windows and need to do manual setup of this thing,

you are in serious trouble if you only have the Buffalo documentation

(I use that term very loosely) and their installation software to rely

    upon.

I run Unix (OpenBSD) on my machines, but a couple of them are set up

dual-boot with Windows XP also available. So my first tack was to boot

Windows and use their installer. I use static IP addresses on my LAN,

with no DHCP server available on the LAN.The default IP address of the print

server is 192.168.11.222 and so I changed the static IP address of the

Windows machine's network connection to 192.168.11.223 and the netmask to

255.255.255.0. I was able to connect to the print server with a web

browser using the default IP address, so the browser could see the print server.

But the Buffalo Windows installer couldn't find the device. So, on to Plan B,

manual setup via the web interface.

I just said I was able to connect with a browser, but the

pile of paper they call a manual doesn't tell you that when you do,

the first thing that will happen is that you will be presented

with a dialog box asking for a username and password (pretty normal for this type of device).

    It also doesn't

tell you what the default username and password are!! So I had to do

some detective work (how did we ever live without the web and search

engines?) and turned up the good work of John S. Lyon Smith who

provided this vital piece of information in his Amazon review of this

    product.

Once I got past the username/password obstacle, setting up the server

manually was not difficult, and the box seems to work. I have a

Brother HL-2140 connected to it and was able to successfully print

from one of my Unix systems running Cups, so if you are running Linux

and Cups, you should be ok. I used an ipp/http connection.

So this product appears to work, after it has run your blood pressure

up during the installation process. If you have anything other than a

completely vanilla Windows setup (and by vanilla, I mean that you do

not use static IP addresses and there is a DHCP server visible to the

print server), be prepared to fight with this thing a bit to get it

working, and it will be only "a bit" if you know what you are doing.

     "Great Product" 2010-02-19
By A Pace (Salt Lake City, UT USA)
We've used several of this same print server throughout our organization over the years. They are about as simple to setup and use as they come. Netgear has done a great job maintaining functionality and ease of use across most of their products but that is particularly true of their parallel to ethernet print servers.

Worked exactly as represented and converted the (HP-LaserJet-5L) Centronix printer to a Ethernet networked one.

     "Is very Mac happy" 2009-06-27
    By Andrew T. Csillag
I bought this by accident and didn't realize that it wasn't "mac compatible", but it turns out happily, that it *very* much is. I plugged it in to my network, asked by router what DHCP addresses it had doled out, went to the one that wasn't my laptop in Firefox and there's the config screen! Set the IP address, and I chose JetDirect for the network printer type and plugged in the IP address, set the printer driver and voila, working printer!

"PS 101 works fine on a mixed network with non-approved printers" 2009-02-12
    By LearnTheHardWay (Charlotte, NC)
    NETGEAR PS101 Mini Print Server

I started out going by the book by installing the provided NETGEAR administation software and using the PS101 on a LEXMARK T640, not on the list of approved printers on the NETGEAR website. The result was a working, but very slow printer with no bidirectional capability. I guessed that using the non-approved printer might be the problem, NETGEAR tech support was no help. All they could tell me was that "the printer is not on the list of approved printers", then I saw a review here and changed tactics altogther.

Uninstall the NETGEAR stuff, put the CD back into it's paper sleeve. Never take it out again unless you need to use it as a frisbee. Get rid of the \\PRINTSERVER\PRINTER port it so helpfully had you create. Reset the PS101. Turn on DHCP, turn the printer on, power up the PS101 and allow it to find an IP in your LAN, it probably will grab the lowest value in your allowed DHCP range (hint, pick a very small range for DHCP). Bring up the http page for the PS101 and assign your static IP, subnet, gateway, disable DHCP, save these settings. Go to the various PC's that will be using the printer with the driver CD that comes from the printer manufacturer. Install a local printer with a "STANDARD TCP/IP PORT", generic network card, adding the IP you assigned to the PS101. Use the appropriate driver from the printer's accompanying CD.

The T640's work great when connected this way, approved or not. The people using the various PC's and LINUX workstations cannot tell that the T640's are not connected directly to their machines. Windows Test Pages print and bidirectional communications work fine. Maybe they notice that the big gray cables are no longer cluttering up their space, and they meet coworkers when picking up their printed work. ALL GOOD!

I needed this card to replace an older Jetdirect card for a printer at work and it was easy to install and configure. No complaints from the user and all is well.

Says it's new, but it doesn't work. Someone from another department had another one, popped it in, worked like a charm. Tried this one again, nothing. Hopefully they will just give me my money back.
