By Jose Chavarria Ch (Heredia, Costa Rica)
This device worked really good... I have someproblems at the setup, but I finally managed to make it work and really works fine, but when I added a new computer with VISTA, even detecting all the attached printers, it does not work. I still have some hope to solve this problem with help from TRENDnet support... besides that.. great product, that, if work with VISTA and XP, would save me a lot of money on printers...

This device will provide wireless printing but will not provide wireless scan functionality - even for printers specifically listed as tested and functioning with this device. In my case this was both my HP officejet 5510 and my Epson CX4800. In addition, if you wish to be able to switch between printers you will need to completely uninstall and reinstall the software, you can not simply plug in another device and add it to the control panel. Still looking for a good alternative for wireless multifunction printers!

"Great compact product, weak documentation" 2010-01-01
By Gabriel Reindl (Coppell, Texas United States)
This is a compact pocket size wireless printer for home or small office use. Works very fast once installed and set up. I have it working with Windows XP PCs as well as Linux (eeePC). Still struggling with Macbook setup though, the connectivity is OK, but the printer queue settings might not be right. I use a Canon PIXMA IP4000.

The provided documentation does not explicitly covers the fact how to set up the WPS with an existing wireless network. One important thing that is not mentioned in the user documentation is the fact that due to the factory settings you HAVE TO use the 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 network for the initial installation. Once you connect with the WPS e.g. with your windows laptop temporarily setup with the address space as above via ad-hoc connection, you can change the settings to your own wireless access point (SSID, address space, encryption).

Although the WPS supports USB2.0, the bidirectional communication with the printer does not work the same way as a directly connected printer via USB port. So you won't be able to see the printer status e.g. color levels in cartriges, etc.

The included USB extension cord is very short, the idea is to attach the WPS to the body of the printer. I would recommend to use a Velcro tape for this purpose, not included with the product.

I would recommend this product for somebody with wireless/IP experience for integration into a pre-existing wireless network. Once set up works reliably.

Installation software included would not install (Error '53' File not found). Updated software would not recognize the print server and displayed error message ("Failed to AddNetwork monitor"). After many emails, Technical support personnel failed solve problem and ended with "wireless print servers are more complicated than wired print servers" (helpful wasn't it?) Instructions are incomprehensible. The whole experience was a major disappointment. Money and time wasted. Have requested to return product for a full refund from MICROBARN (AMAZON LINK).      "Works with LaserJet 3050 both printer and scanner Win 7 64-bit" 2010-09-03
    By Kahraman C Karadeniz
This was the cheapest print server I could find online (50 bucks shipped). I used another Hawking product (directional wifi antenna) in the past and I was happy with it so I gave another shot. It works beautifully with HP LaserJet 3050 USB printer / scanner. Please note that this printer is not in the list of supported printers list of manufacturer. Maybe that's why it didn't work out of box but when I upgraded the firmware to 2.33 it recognized the printer and worked fine. I tested on both Win 7 64 and 32 (print and scan). Software is very nice.

"Product not compatible and horrible tech support" 2010-09-01
    By let_it_bee
I purchased this because it was one of the very few multi-function print servers that listed my Canon MP830 MFP. When I received it, I tried to install it but it was not detecting the printer properly, it only saw the fax portion. I called tech support and they told me I had to call back between M-F 9-5 Pacific time to talk with a level 2 tech. I called on a Monday at 3 pacific and they said I had to call back the next day as their level 2 tech wasn't available. I called back on Tuesday at the same time, and I got the same run around, that I had to call back first thing in the morning. Since I work, I'm unable to do that and just decided to return the item back to Amazon, which so far has been the easiest thing to do thanks to Amazon's great return setup. I'm just going to spend a little bit more and by a network capable printer.

"Not Mac compatible but better than Belkin & Keyspan" 2010-06-14
    By Doron Avizov (New York)
I bought the Haking, Belkin and Keyspan Tripplite. The Keyspan Tripplite was just a pain. There was a recent driver on their website for Mac but no instructions on what to do with it. When I downloaded and doubleclicked it, Mac OS tried to open it with Text Edit. The Belkin was better but auto-connect and disconnect just didn't work right. I'd have to wait what felt like a minute or more for a print out to come out after the auto-connect connected. Even when manually connected I still could not use the scanner. No thank you.

The Hawking was the smallest, cheapest and easiest to install. It worked first try and even with my office's VPN-connected XP laptop. Unlike the Belkin, I didn't have to play with firewall rules. My only gripe is that it does not have a driver for Mac so to print from my Mac I have to manually unplug the USB cable from the server and plug it in to the back of the Mac, then plug the printer back into the server when done. I emailed support several days ago asking for a Mac driver and never heard from them. I have multiple computers connected to my router, wired and wireless. They all auto-connect and print fine using the Hawking print server with my Canon MFP 4150. So far I've had to manually connect to scan when initiating the scan from the printer. That makes sense. If the request comes from the printer instead of one of the PCs, how should the USB server know which one to connect it to. There is a "network scanner" button in the user interface. I have not played enough with it yet.

As long as you don't care that it's not Mac, Linux or Unix compatible, I recommend it.

"It barely does the job." 2009-10-14
    By RodPas (Dallas, TX)
For the price of this unit I would expect something of a superior quality. The unit is small and easy to hide, easy to connect but that's as much as I can positively say. The unit comes with almost no instructions (a simple 3 pages booklet). You can check online for instructions but they are weak and vague as well. The configuration is at the best, complicated. After trying several things I called tech support. That is another story. You will get someone in India (you know from now what I was dealing with). The first level of support seems not to know anything about IT, up to the point of having no idea what the Print Mode (Queued or Raw) is. After 3 tries, I got a second level support specialist. That guy knew a little bit more than his 1st level colleagues, but he did not have any idea on how to configure this unit correctly, up to the point to tell me my printer wasn't supported when it is listed in their 'supported printers list'. Then he blamed it on the driver which works fantastic if I connect the printer directly to the PC via USB port. Finally, I stop calling them and I decided to do some investigation on my side before starting the RMA process. I discovered you need to do a little trick to make this work correctly (just needed to think laterally instead of straight forward). After several tries, I got it up and running, not for Hawking tech support intervention but for the amount of hours of try, rethink, error and retry cycles. In the end, this unit cost me more than the price I paid for it. My best recommendation, if you are not an IT geek, stay away from this product.

"Lots of mods, rock solid so far" 2010-09-06
    By Matthew
Purchased the 2TB version of this device 6 months ago.

I immediately replaced all of the drives with 2TB drives (WD Caviar Green WD20EARS) to get the raw capacity up to 8TB. Have been using the 500GB drives (Seagate Barracuda LP ST3500412AS) the unit came with in various computers and haven't had any problems with them.

Replacing the drives wasn't as easy as I hoped it would be, I tried replacing them all at once but it didn't like that so I replaced one at a time and it rebuilt the array each time. After swapping out the last drive it then recognized the 8TB and all was well. For good measure I then told it to reinitialize the entire array (as RAID5) before putting any data on it. Because of the rebuild times (many hours) you have to be patient but the result is that I have the 8TB unit with good quality HDs for substantially less than Iomega wants for the 8TB unit. It may be possible to change the drives faster by changing RAID levels before swapping out drives but I'm not patient enough to test out such theories.

I also replaced the fan (its a standard 92mm case fan) for a quieter one.

If you're worried about voiding warranties or aren't sure which end of a screwdriver to hold, then modding the unit probably isn't for you.

The unit has been rock solid. Its primarily used for storing and streaming media using CIFS and AFP. Time Machine has no problem making backups on the device. The web management page is straight forward and easy to use. Being able to monitor the device via SNMP is also nice.

I'm using the same firmware the device came with (2.1.9.46472) and since I haven't had any problems don't see a reason to update to the latest version (2.1.30.10908 at the moment).

The only problem I've run into so far is trying to have the unit be media server. With both UPnP and iTunes haven't had any luck getting it to work reliably. I've never had any success getting UPnP to work reliably for any server/client paring so I didn't have any expectations that it was going to work in the first place.

    By C. Thomas (Boston)
My original review seems to have been deleted. It was quite extensive and I won't reproduce it here cause it will probably just get deleted again.

If you ware looking at this device for an enterprise environment be careful. Yes, it does support Active Directory integration but there are severe limitation with regards to assigning permissions. Permissions can only be assigned at the top level and only to folders. If you want to restrict access to deeply nested folders, to bad. This is probably fine for most home or small office uses but with AD support and 8TB of size you might expect more. Well don't, you won't get it.

Bought the unit a month ago. Out of the box It had a problem: "The Iomega StorCenter device is degraded and data protection is at risk. A drive may have either failed or been removed from your Iomega StorCenter device." By switching the power "OFF" and "ON" the device started data reconsruction wich took the rest of the day. After few days one of 4 drives failed again and I repeat the process of reconstructing the data. And I thought it is a good idea to keep the unit power OFF. After about two weeks I decided to copy some more data to the unit and everything went well, but next day I got same message and started data reconstruction once again. Next day I was trying to reconfigure my Itunes from the USB drive to the StorCenter and the unit stop responding. After I cycle the power the unit send me surprising message: "The Iomega StorCenter device has failed and some data loss may have occurred. Multiple drives may have either failed or been removed from your storage system." So I lost ALL my data. After phone conversation with tech support they refuse to replace the unit saying that I have to go through some steps before they can do so. Didn't decide what to do yet.

"Works with Legacy Impact Printers" 2010-03-05
    By W. Wiencke (Washington DC)
I am using this print server with Panasonic KX-P2023 and KX-P1123 impact printers for hammering out multi-part pin feed invoices and checks.

It works flawlessly on a Windows network. I have not had the same good fortune with some other compact print servers (Ethernet to parallel).

The unit itself is quite stylish and compact. Installation was fast and simple. The instructions (in only a few pages of a huge 15 or more language volume) were clear and to the point.

There are three negative features that lost this little print server a star in my rating. Two of the negatives are common to all mini-print servers so it's probably a bit harsh for me to downgrade this otherwise excellent product.

First of all is that the print server is about two inches long with a male centronics connector at the end. If your printer has a connection in the rear the interface can get in the way of feedng forms. This is not unique to Level One because the other small servers have the same shape, tend to be larger, and present the same problem.

Second, the external power supply has a European plug. An adapter is provided for US use, but the whole assembly is unusually bulky. The mains pins are exceptionally long in order to fit into recessed round European mains sockets. As a result, the power supply and US adapter assembly is quite tall and top heavy.

Third, why on earth doesn't someone make a print server with a 25 pin Sub-D printer connection? There are Sub-D to Centronics cables on the market with right or left hand Centronics connectors. Although bulky, those cables tuck neatly out of the way and allow the print server to be put out of the way. I ended up purchasing a female Centronics to 25 pin Sub-D adapter (I don't think Amazon carries them) just so I could tuck the print server out of the way.

The Level One FPS-1031 appears to be an excellent product that works flawlessly with my legacy impact printers, that easily installs on a network, and that might require a bit more space above your power strip than you'd expect.

I did email Level One technical support to ask if my printers were supported. Their answer was a prompt but terse link to their compatibility chart. I'd give Level One points for promptly responding, but would remain neutral about their bedside manner or grasp of English.

"No support - Did not work" 2010-02-07
    By TB (CA USA)
Amazon purchase was easy as usual. Delivery was prompt as usual. Plugged in the print server and all three computers (XP laptop, XP desktop and Mac Powerbook) found the printer. None of the computers could print to the printer! There was no phone support for the print server so I emailed support. I received an answer three days later that said to download and install the latest drivers. It was obvious they had not bothered to read my email, as I had already done that. By this time the XP desktop was starting to act up, so I uninstalled everything and sent the server back.

"Good, Inexpensive, Well Documented Unit that Works" 2009-10-11
By G. P. Neer (Costa Mesa, CA, USA)
    Comparing StarTech to Buffalo:

I recently purchased and returned a Buffalo print server, so I'll begin this review with a short comparison. The Buffalo had only a small documentation insert, maybe 10 palm sized pages. The StarTech server includes a quick start guide of the same length, but also on their install CD is a 146 page document with detailed user instructions. The Buffalo instructions are either consistently wrong and/or misleading while the StarTech instructions are clear and accurate. The StarTech user manual was written by a non-native American English speaker, but the occasional inelegant phrasing is a small price to pay for the information. The StarTech install CD works and all links to documentation and software work--the Buffalo CD does not work as documented and links to the documentation are broken. The most important difference for me is that on the Buffalo print server a 16 page 11MB file caused the server to fail and print only the first 2 pages with either blanks or garbage filed pages following. The same document prints perfectly through the StarTech unit.

Both units have web-base administration options, but the StarTech is more cleanly designed and offers many more features. The StarTech manual includes instructions on firmware upgrades, which I have not yet tried. The Buffalo print server instructions and web site offer nothing in the way of firmware upgrades.

I have owned the StarTech unit for only 24 hours, so there may be updates to this review should anything important develop in the future.

    Hardware Setup:

My hardware setup is a Dell Desktop Dimension XPS Gen3 with 3TB of storage and dual LCD monitors, an HP LaserJet P2015d printer, a Dell Laptop and a Linksys Wireless WRT54G-TM router which was supplied by T-Mobile. The laptop is connected wirelessly to the router, the Desktop is wired directly via an Ethernet cable. Both computers run Windows XP SP3.

    Installation of the Print Server:

The package description does not mention the need for an Ethernet cable to connect the server and the router, but you will need to purchase one if you don't have a spare lying around as I was lucky enough to have.

I performed the initial installation on the desktop and used the default settings with two exceptions. I used an IP address of 192.168.0.115 and I changed the default server name to "P1." On my router, under Basic Setup screen, the DHCP server is enabled using a starting address of 192.168.0.100. I limited the Max users to 10 and assigned a Static DNS 1 as 192.168.0.115. The desktop installation process and testing of the 16 page document took approximately 10 minutes from unpacking to printing.

    Installation of Local Printer:

The installation structuctions are a bit uncleat on the actual setting up of the local printer so I'll relate what worked for me:

Click on Control Panel, Select Printers and Faxes. Select Add printer option. Select "Local printer attached to this computer" and click next. On Select a Printer Port screen select Creat a new port.Use the pull down to select "Standard TCP/IP Port. A new wizard will open up. On the Add Port page I typed in my static IP address 192.168.0.115. The port name is automatically filled in so go to the next page. On the Additional Port Information Required page, keep the default Generic Network card and click Next. Now you are finished with the hard part. Just select your printer, install the drivers if needed, and print your test page. The same procedure can be followed on any other computer, including laptops that you wish to access the server.

One note of warning. If you cannot ping the IP address of the server from the computer you are using, installation will fail. It's beyond the scope of this review to resolve that issue, it personally took me several hours of trial and error. One useful tool is a free program called AngryIP. It will automatically test for live reachable IPs and for any open ports associated with them. McAfee warns prior to installing this program, but I have suffered no ill effects from using it.

    Internet Printing:

The print server also supports IPP (Printing over the internet) and you can find detailed instructions in their user manual. Again using the Add Printer in Windows XP, just select "A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer and on the Specify a Printer page click Connect to a printer on the Internet or a home or office network. I then typed in :"http://192.168.0.115:613/lpt1" (without the quotes). Now if I happen to have my laptop in an internet cafe and feel the urge to print, Ill have it waiting when I get home. It did feel a bit strange using the lpt1 for the install, however it worked on the first try so who am I to get upset? Just follow the instructions in the manual, substituting your own IP address, and if needed your forwarding port if you use something other than the standard.

One additional installation note for internet printing to work. You'll need to go to your router and setup Port Forwarding. On my Linksys I went to the Applications and Gaming area, typed in IPP for the application name, 631 for the starting and ending port range, selected TCP as the protocol, typed in 115 as the ending part of the preselect IPAddress and checked Enable. Then saved the settings. You may need to make firewall changes and possibly on the router uncheck the Block Anonymous Internet Requests on the Security tab area. Internet printing is dead easy once installed.

    Conclusion:

If the need for an Ethernet cable had been mentioned and if the documentation for adding printers had been just a little more clear it would have rated 5 stars.

Overall, the StarTech device seems to be a good bargain for $45.00. I'd purchase another one and would recommend it to anyone in the market for a good, cheap, well-documented unit that works.
