 "Media Smart - NOT!" 2010-05-04
By Stephen Dolan (California)
So I read the reviews and they were mostly positive wit a few bad ones that you'd expect with any technology device. I'm an IT Professional of over 30 years so I know what I'm doing (most of the time).

Out of the box there's no documentation, just a glossy flyer to get you going. That's OK, but not great. It took me a while to find out how to set everything up because of the lack of documentation or instructions. The main issue comes when you try to load your media collection. Basically it's taken me 2 weeks to load my collection - I had to do it all manually as I had issues with the media collector. OK I can live with that, but now the machine is at 100% cpu all the time. Basically I can't use it at all (except as a NAS device). I RDC'd to it to find out what's going on. Twonky. It's using between 89 and 97% and I'm not even streaming any media. Rebooting frees it up again - for about 2 hours, then it's locked up again.

HP said they patched Twonky to correct this issue - I've updated the software and applied all of the patches - still locked. I have no choice but to send this overpriced door stop back to HP. I'll probably build my own WHS after this debacle - it'll be easire and save me a lot of time.

Do yourself a favor and same 2 - 3 weeks of heartache by looking elsewhere for a WHS.

"Not as easy to setup as you have heard, but worth it." 2010-04-25
By Ben Richie (Houston, TX USA)
I have spent approx. 30 hours total working through bugs and adding in software that did not come bundled with the server to get things working the way I wanted. If you do not currently have all of your media on a local machine you still will spend countless hours transferring data(mine was on an existing NAS server). Other than those complaints this was an excellent machine for the money. Super easy to add storage and the media streaming and XBOX interaction are awesome.

If you can figure out any advanced features in MSOffice you will be able to manage this server and will not be disappointed.

"Decent But Has Fatal Flaw for Streaming Movies" 2010-04-24
By Alex M. Logan
I've had my MediaSmart server for about 6 months now. I bought the top of the line model and have loaded it with 7.5 TB of hard drive space and about 2TB of data which has been duplicated to back itself up.

The main reason I bought this server is so that I could convert all of my DVDs in to digital files and watch them through a brand new Mac Mini on my TV.

Once set up, everything runs great EXCEPT... the HP server has built in, unchangeable software that "load balances" the data about every hour of the day - yes every hour of the day. This task that the software is programmed to perform takes up most of the CPU and memory and basically kills streaming for anything the size of a DVD movie stream. I say "kills" because it makes the movie video and audio stutter and get locked up for a second or two almost constantly.

I have researched this issue extensively and there is nothing that can be done about it short of tearing apart the server and replacing the memory and CPU (which is not for the faint of heart - it requires pretty much dismantling the entire device.) HP needs to fix this issue. Apparently it was an issue with older models and HP has still not fixed it, so I am not holding my breath.

Bottom line, if you want this server to stream DVD quality (or HD quality) movies to your TV, forget it. At least until HP fixes this long-standing load balancing problem with their software.

 "Better Solutions Elsewhere" 2010-04-20
By D. Peters (Dallas, Texas USA)
I was really excited to get this product after reading all of the great reviews. I was dissappointed though. First off, as everyone knows, Time Machine backups don't work. And most other features were problematic to implement as well.

If you are looking for a better solution and are even a little bit tech savy then do yourself a favor and look at the Synology products. They are cheaper, faster, use less power and have more features.
