 "Great Little Server!" 2010-05-01
By J. MICHEL (Nebraska)
This server has it's limitations compaired to it's larger MediaSmart brothers, but it is small and compact and works well. It's not much larger than an external hard drive, but yet is powered by Windows Home Server. I picked this up on Amazon for 200 bucks which was awesome! If you're looking to do PC bakups and don't care about media streaming and huge capacity, then this is your machine!

"Good media server at a decent price" 2010-04-25
By A. Khan (Austin, TX United States)
I was attracted to the LX195 because of the price and I'm glad I purchased it. I've consolidated all my library and the fact that all my laptops/machines are now backed up is a bonus. I have two xbox 360s and one ps3, and they all are able to properly connect and play movies off the media smart server. I like the HP software that comes with the server (for once HP has made software that actually works well and does not irritate the user). I do have occasional issues with the home server console which is vital to remotely manage the machine since the lx195 doesn't contain any video outputs (no way to hook up a monitor/keyboard/mouse to it). The 640GB hard disk also is a bit small, I didn't think so at first but once you start backing up other machines, storing all your files such as pictures, movies and audio, the space limitation is quickly reached. I will eventually replace the LX195 with something a little more powerful such as the EX line or build my own similar system, Id love to be able to add additional internal drives which the LX195 can't due to its compact size. But for the price, this can't be beat.

"OK, this was meant for me" 2010-04-21
By Just Gary (Hilo, HI)
I needed a simple home server and I just could not justify the $400+ costs. I have simple needs for my server. I own 4 1TB USB hard storage drives that I use to move data around and so this server allows me to connect them without any hassle and I get instant expansion. I have four working computers and an XBox but I don't need a real server to connect them, just share movies, keep the restore files, and some data. I also need to remote access when I do travel and this server solves that problem also. I can remote access my main computer at home or just use the storage devices on the server. I read the problems with Windows 7 not finding this server. I was worried because I use a two router system with my main computer on the second router while the server would be on the primary. As it turns out, I had no problems with my Windows 7 computer finding the server and connecting. So, my installation was fairly smooth, even though the server took a while to update (I selected the automatic updating in the options).

AT the price of this server, it is absolutely perfect. If you think about it, a 640HD drive, the ability to attach 4 USB HD drives through a network connector, a Windows Server Operating System, and remote access makes this a winner. Even if they charge $9.99 after the first year if remote access (I understand that there is a way to bypass that), that is a small price. Now I have a cheap server that I can remote access and I can watch media all over the house through different PCs and my XBox system. So for what this server does and the price it does it at, I am extremely happy.

I do have one concern but it is more of an unknown. My guess is the price is so low because HP is ready to close this model out. As long as I can update the operating system, I should be ok, but it probably means the support from HP will phase out faster than the other HP servers. But for about $200, man I will just have fun with this as long as I can.

"HP LX195 Home Server Is a great product" 2010-04-19
By Robert D. Keith (San Antonio TX)
This product is a great product for an entry level home server. It backs up all my computers every night. It has a place to jointly hold all my media files from all my computers. After the first backup it takes about 15 minutes to back up each computer.

The only problem I have is I would like to make it visible to the outside so I could get to my files while I am not at home. My ISP calls that business access and wants to charge me $15.00 a month to open up the HTTP port 80. Oh well. At least I have a good back up of everything. It also gives you the opportunity to back all that up an offsite backup site like Amazon.

I don't know why HP has discontinued this product. All the new servers are $500 to $800.

If you find a used or new version of this and need a nice small home server this is a good solution.

"Fits nicely in its place" 2010-04-15

This little HP is an integral part of my home network - I don't use it for video backup or content delivery.

To understand why I like the HP, it helps to understand how I use media in my home, and what other devices are in use.

Background: I have a complex network in my home - most of which is wired gigabit ethernet to various clients throughout my home.

I have several media players/servers and Network Attached Storage, with more than 15TB available on my network.

I backup my NAS devices and my editing systems (many TB on single systems) using dedicated backup solutions. This little HP could not handle the volume of my larger computers.

I have a many TB FreeNAS device for serving .mp4 encoded movies to PS3's and other media players.

I use a PS3 media server(software on a PC) to serve freshly recorded television shows to DLNA compliant media players - This setup is functioning as a network DVR with 7 tuners - it works great, with awesome quality and essentially unlimited space.

Now that you know how I use other media you can have a better understanding of what do I do with the HP.

I also have several 'user' computers - and this is where the HP fills a real niche. I have the HP backup 8 'user' computers, and create a repository of Music and Pictures available to the computers and media players in the house. I spend quite a bit of time making video content available on my network, but I don't spend any time with music and photo content - the HP does all of that for me without any effort on my part. I don't have to worry about the other computers in my home (HTPC's, laptops, and desktops other family members use, but I don't personally). If a computer is not getting backed up, I get notified of the problem (if it has been 5 or more days) - and I can then initiate a backup from any one of the other computers.

I use media servers extensively -and I highly recommend this device - in the right circumstances.

The one drawback I have found in my environment - is this particular HP will not pull Tivo content, the larger HP MediaSmart devices will do so. However, there are alternate solutions which fill that void
