The DP-301P+ failed during initial configuration. D-Link support is terrible. They jump to conclusions and bombard the hapless user with dumb questions and irrelevant suggestions.

I mainly use a MacBook and thus I attempted to setup the DP-301P+ using the web interface. The print server locked up during the first configuration save and subsequently required a userid and password different from the default (I was locked out). I installed the DLink admin software(PSadmin) on my old PC which was running Windows XP SP3 and all updates. No luck - PSadmin could not 'discover' the DP-301P+. I could ping, scan and open an web browser session to the DP-301P+ from all my computers so I know the network was working. The DP-301P+ also passed all of its power on self tests.



I sent DLink an email explaining this and got back.

" Kindly verify this issue on other O.S like XP /Vista and check ." DUH??? I had already done this and provided detailed results.

They also sent along irrelevant instructions on installing third party print drivers that appeared to be cut and pasted from a KB article about problems another Mac user had with the print server.



OK so I tried the basics all one more time. And set them a new email explaining once again my problem was "I can connect but not login to the the DP-301P+. Thus the problem is that I can neither login to nor manage the DP-301P+. I have tried both PS admin and the web interface."



Their reply

"D-Link no longer supports the DP-301P. Since you are using a Mac, try using a different browser other than Safari."



Wow now it is getting plain silly.

I have a DP-301P+ not a 301P. The DP-301P+ is listed as a supported product at the Dlink web site at [...]

I had already tried a PC running Windows and IE8. Also firefox on the mac.



So once again I explained and emailed DLink.

It has now been over 24 hours since my email to Dlink. I gave up and returned the print server a little while ago.

The next one will have a factory reset button on the box.

It lacks a hardware RESET button. Maybe I should give it a four star, because you may not need it at all. For example, if you set a password, and then forget it, it will never ever be recovered, and you cannot change its configuration forever. And it is an expensive unit (about $60).

Tried on 2 Windows 7 machines

Installed using the setup program but nothing actually printed from the machine I installed from.

On a second machine could be detected as a network printer but couldn't connect to it.

Support site requires registration but once that is done fails to redirect so impossible to raise problem with D-Link

I purchased this print server and a new wireless router when my old combo wireless router/print server died. I installed the wireless router first, then added the printer. It was up and running in less than 15 minutes. However, I am familiar with network protocols and addressing schemes, and I can see where those without such knowledge might have problems.



The default IP address for this device is 192.168.0.1, and all computers on your network must share that IP scheme to use the printer connected to this print server. In my experience, most routers (wireless or wired) use a default IP address of 192.168.1.1, so the IP address for the print server will need to be changed. Note the next-to-last number in the IP address is pre-set to zero; it must match that of the existing network (in my example, the number 1).



The included instructions guide you to accessing the print server device - a few hoops to jump through but once you're there you can easily change the default IP address and you'll be able to access it directly in the future.



Be sure to follow the directions exactly when creating the new printer port on your computer, particularly where you have to define the LPR Queue name.

I have a Lexmark E series and it is working just fine. My network consists of WinXP and Win2000 machines.
