 "Didn't Work" 2010-02-02
By D. Boseman (NW Florida)
I have lots of experience with computers and networking, but could not get this print server to work. Tech support finally told me it wasn't compatible with my printer. I finally got my printer networked by installing the driver on my Windows Home Server (WHS) and connecting the printer, via USB, to it. I had read that it's best not to install software and drivers on the WHS, which is why I ordered this print server. Then, I figured that since WHS is based on Server 2003, it shouldn't hurt anything. No problems after 2 + months. Another option is to connect your printer to a computer, share it, and leave that computer on when you may be printing. A lot cheaper, more reliable, and fewer headaches.

"Works with Window 7 (64 Bit) -after proper setup" 2009-12-19
By K. Boericke (Philadelphia, PA)
First, ignore the review by the person that said that it doesn't work with Vista 64 bit. I am convinced that they don't know what they are talking about. Call D-Link tech support if you have problems. I was VERY impressed with the communications skills and tech savvy of the person on the other end of the line (probably India).

I have had this print server for over 6 months. It solved a HOST of problems that I had with my HP Color Laserjet 1600 being shared off of my wife's computer.

I've used it with Windows XP machines (Home and Pro), Window Vista Home (32 Bit), 1 Linux Ubuntu machine, and now Window 7 (64 Bit). I needed to call D-Link Customer support for the Windows 7 setup, because there is a step that the manual does not show that needs to be done for it to work on the Windows 7 machine (not sure if it's because of the operating system, or the 64 bit interface).

Window 7 Setup notes:

When setting up the LPR in TCP/IP Port Settings (as shown in the manual), make sure that you CHECK the box that says "LPR Byte Counting Enabled". I initially left it blank as the manual shows, and the test page printed fine, but I could not print any other documents from this printer. I determined the problem was with the D-Link because I could plug the printer directly into the computer and all printed fine. D-Link had me walk through the setup, and told me to check this box. After that, it worked fine from the Win7 PC, and all other PC's attached to the network.

Very, very pleased with this product. If you are having trouble with it, it's probably due to something you have wrong in your setup.

"Hit or Miss Print Server" 2009-12-17
By Brookworld (Silicon Valley, CA)
Purchased this from a local retailer for $20 plus tax - a really good deal. Connected to an H-P LJ-1012 which is a basic laser printer model from about 4 years ago.

I'm a mid-level PC user, understand the lexicon but don't know the technical standards. Basically, this device is hit or miss with your setup, and you won't get any help from D-Link, not by e-mail and the FAQ really sucks.

Here's my experience.

NOTE: WINDOWS XP (SP2)

Following the quick setup instructions, the 301U server found my H-P LJ 1012 printer, but my DSL internet connection was disabled, so I had to disconnect the Print Server to get back my DSL. As mentioned, D-Link doesn't do tech support; absolutely nothing helpful in its web database and radio silence via e-mail.

One day with some idle time, I decided to try again and got it to work on my network. I ignored the quick setup directions; basically, ignored directions on changing my Windows XP network connection settings (as the setup settings would disable my DSL connection).

I followed the directions to electrically connect the Print Server to the network, then used the D-link PS Admin software to do a test page, which printed the IP address. My DSL connection remained active and the test page indicated that the Print Server had an assigned IP address in the network. I then installed the H-P Printer by following the directions using the IP address (and creating an associated printer port) shown on the test page. This worked on all 3 of my PC's and the DSL connection remained enabled. Later on, I learned that the Printer Server IP address would change (don't know why except to guess that IP addresses can be dynamic) which would disable the related printer port. However, again, by using the PS Admin software, I was able to set the Print Server to hold the IP address by clicking the "manual" box. For the past 2 months, the settings held and my DSL connection remain enabled.

I was lucky to stumble upon this method of installation, but D-link was absolutely useless in getting it to work for me.

"Not Compatible with Vista Business 64 Bit" 2009-10-23
By Directed Energy (USA)
I got the D-Link DP-301U Ethernet Print Server from Fry's about a month ago and was not able to get the supplied CD software to install. I was trying to use the software on a Lenovo X301 Laptop with Windows Vista Business 64 bit. As a result, I returned the item.

The product packaging has written on the outside of the box "compatible with Vista", but does not specify which version of Vista. Using such imprecise verbiage, in the broader sense, suggest compatibility with the both the 32 and 64 bit versions of Vista as appose to one or the other. At the very least, it leaves open ambiguities.

This sort of loosely worded product claim and packaging is either sloppy and or unscrupulous marketing.

Minus 1.5 for Ambiguous Product Claim and Marketing

Minus 1.5 for Not Compatible with Vista 64

"Excellent Printer Server for Cheap Prices" 2009-10-18
By Super Critique
I once bought a Netgear Print Server about 2yrs ago and it did not work. Thought all Printer servers are the same and assuming the high-ends version are better, but out of my price range. Today (Oct 17, 2009), I saw this D-Link DP-301U at Fry's for $19.99 bought and give it another try with my Canon D320 ImageClass it works as charm. Very easy to find the Printer Server specific IP & MAC ID by looking up the via my Wireless Router. It has a built-in web browser configuration as well. It is not necessary to use the CD came with it. Recommend Reserved an IP on the router to match this printer server MAC/IP addy then attached the USB Printer into the Ethernet port, all less than 3 minutes! It is longer to install drivers to each on my PC on the network. Now this Stationary Printer becomes Wireless Printer and versatile print sharing with the network. Very impressed!! Highly Recommended for those old Printers still with USB!!!!
