"Works great with HP Color Laserjet 3700" 2010-05-22
By Joy Aurigemma (Honolulu, HI United States)
My husband volunteers as a computer administrator at an elementary school. Someone donated an HP Color Laserjet 3700 printer (high quality, high volume color laser, no longer made). The only issue with the HP 3700 was that the network card was starting to fail; sometimes it worked, sometimes not. A new NIC for the 3700 was $200+ with no warranty. Tried the WGPS606 print server even though the HP 3700 was not on the supported list. It worked great. The trickiest part is setting up the print server initially, but even that is done with an easy-to-use software wizard. Configuring the client PCs to use the print server was VERY easy; took less than 1 minute on each PC - just put in the Resource CD and follow the prompts to install on a PC.

The great thing is that this print server supports two printers, has a 4 port wired switch, and can be used as a wireless G access point. For the price, functionality, and ease of setup I gladly give this 5 stars.

"A pain to setup but worth it for the functions" 2010-04-25
By Ahmed Cherif (Houston,TX)
This print server is a pain for your average user, but when you look at the benefits like 2 USB ports, 4 ethernet ports plus the wireless functionality with WPA-PSK security I personaly think it's worth it, for only $35.00 it's a steal.

Well of course you could find something really easy to setup like the latest new external hard drives with netwoking capabilities, even print server functionality but that cost about 5 times the price of this unit(5x$35)

These are my intructions to install this NETGEAR print server on a windows machine with Linksys router to print on a Brother MFC 7420:**

First tryed to follow instructions from CD no luck, so I had to upgrade firmware to Firmware Version V1.0_025 and upgrade software to 2.0

During setup Print Server was assigning IP 192.168.1.202

I had to change that to 192.168.1.110 to fall within my Linksys range (my network range was between 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.149)

Set the same security as my network to WPA-PSK

And when following CD install prompts I ran into errors, ignored errors and in my printer's PROPERTIES in PORTS tab I moved my printer from port LPT1 to the new TCP/IP PORT that I just created( when adding tcp/ip port in the PORT NAME & PRINTER NAME enter the ip address only, in my case 192.168.1.110 and in PROTOCOL check the LPR not the RAW, also in the QUEUE enter L1 and if needed L2 for a second printer and finaly check the LPR BYTE COUNTING IS ENABLED)

good luck.

 "Not worth it" 2010-04-15
By N. Jones
We have never gotten this thing to work the way it should. We followed all directions possible, the printer would make noises, but for some reason the connection kept timing out before any document would print. We tried it with Windows and Mac operating systems, but neither worked. Finally, we put all computers on the same wireless workgroup/network and connected the printer to one fixed computer to print. This has been working great! I hate having to have a desktop on when I'm not using it, but I can print from anywhere in my house now. Thus, this product was a complete waste of money.

 "WGPS606" 2010-03-25

Box and NG help desk said Lexmark E342n was not supported. We used free trial of Cisco Network Magic to facilitate the install. I use the print server to remotely access the Lexmark and an HP 6210 "all in one". Everything is working very well. As noted above, NG help desk was anything but helpful. If you can get it to install with a "non-supported" printer, it works just fine.

 "Not perfect" 2010-03-21
By Stuart R. Biggerstaff (Kansas City, MO)
One of these at home, connecting two printers and a NAS wirelessly, one at work connecting two printers to wired ethernet. This thing is versatile, which is probably exactly why some people have had trouble.

Since it basically connects a USB device to the network, a lot of devices Netgear doesn't list will work. But at full price, trying isn't a good bet. And Netgear says multifunction devices will generally only work as printers--so if scanning is important you should keep that in mind.

Almost nicer than the print server function is its function as a wireless bridge. You can connect four ethernet devices to a wireless network if they are physically close to each other, without having to get separate wireless network cards for them. For instance, if you have a printer and already have a wired print server that works with it, even if it definitely doesn't work with this it will work.

From the complaints, it sounds like one of the things that has caused problems is that this has two IP addresses, one for the wired and another for the wireless network interface. And they are effectively on the same network, and only one is prominently displayed in the setup. Keeping that in mind helps a lot in getting things going.

The other problem I've noticed is a little more fundamental, and if Netgear could fix it with a firmware update it would be appreciated. The thing doesn't have an entry for a gateway in its network setup. That means it can only communicate with one subnet in a complex network, and needs a computer to provide access to it from the rest of the network.

In the end, a useful device. But it's hard to figure what Netgear was thinking when they designed it. The challenging setup seems to make it most appropriate for business networks, but its limitations make it less useful there than home.

A refurb unit for $20-30.00 is a nice problem-solver.
